- This summer, I and my family watched the film "Green Book". I watched this movie at home, not at the cinema, but it was a really good time!
- The world premiere of the film took place in the fall of 2018, and in Kazakhstan on January 24, 2019. The director of the picture was Peter Farrelli, and the main roles were played by Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali, known for the films “The Lord of the Rings”, “The Hunger Games”, etc. In December 2018, the Green Book entered the list of 10 best films of 2018 published by the American Film Institute (AFI). The film was awarded three Golden Globes in the categories of "Best Film - Comedy or Musical", "Best Supporting Actor" (Mahershala Ali) and "Best Screenplay". At the Academy Awards, the film received three awards in the same categories, and was also nominated for Best Actor (Viggo Mortensen) and Best Editing.
- The Green
Book is an American biographical comedy drama, the plot of which is based on
the real story of the journey through the south of the USA by the famous jazz
pianist Don Shirley and the usual driver Tony Vallelonga, between whom
friendship develops over time. The film openly raises a problem of racial
discrimination in America in the 60s of the 20th century, as well as the
relationship and interaction of the white and color population of the United
States.
- New York, 1962 Frank Vallelonga's bouncer, Italian-American, nicknamed Tony Chatterbox (Viggo Mortensen), is looking for a new job due to the closure of the nightclub he worked for. He is invited to an interview with Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali), an African-American pianist who is looking for a driver for his concert tour of the southern states of America. Don hires Tony, and they decide to hike quickly to return to New York on Christmas Eve. Representatives of Don’s recording studio give Tony a copy of the Green Book, a guide for black travelers to the United States, which lists hotels, restaurants, and gas stations that can serve them. It would seem an insignificant detail, but it is this detail that most clearly reflects the problem that the picture raises, and because of which it received such a name.
- This is an
incredibly deep, but at the same time light movie, in which, through the story
of two completely different people, you understand how cruel our world is and
what you need to deal with. I really liked the play of the actors and all the
scenery, thanks to which I really got the feeling that this is America in the
60s. And the restored works of the real Don Shirley require special attention.
Most of all I like the composition “Blue Skies”, I listen to it several times
until now, it is so beautiful.
- If you have not seen this film, I highly recommend it for viewing. I am sure that in one way or another it will hook you and make you think about a lot!
- Have you watched this movie? What impressions did it leave with you? I will be very interested in your opinion!

INKTOBER: THE DRAWING CHALLENGE
- I really like to draw, so I decided to devote this post to an interesting drawing flash mob, in which I am taking part now.
- This
challenge is called INKTOBER, and it is held every year in the month of
October. The author of this flash mob is Jake Parker, who created it in 2009 in
order to improve his artistic skills. However, in the end, hundreds, thousands
and even millions of people took up his idea, who also wished to join the month
of daily drawing in order to develop their skills, instill the habit of drawing
every day, become famous or just have a good time. For several years, the challenge
took on an incredible scale and not only brought together millions of artists
around the world, but also allowed many of them to find friends, like-minded
people, and even a soul mate. I wonder if Jake Parker thought that his flash
mob would become so popular?

Jake Parker - So what is the essence of this flash mob? His main task is to draw every day throughout October. But there is a small nuance: initially the challenge was started by J. Parker in order to improve his drawing skills of various kinds of ink, including black markers, liners, pens, etc. That is why the challenge is called INKTOBER, that is, a combination of the words INK and OCTOBER. The creator of the flash mob invited the participants to upload their daily ink work to the network and mark them with the hash tag: #inktober.
- Every year more and more people from different countries, cities, continents and islands joined the challenge. Jake compiled and published a list of topics for the whole month so that everyone could take part in the flash mob. However, a variety of INKTOBER lists appeared on the net, offering a wide variety of topics: from fantastic animals to everyday items. It is not necessary to follow any specific list, you can simply draw what your heart desires, and the most important thing is to do it every day and preferably with ink.
- ANYONE CAN DO INKTOBER, JUST PICK UP A PEN AND START DRAWING. (Jake Parker/https://inktober.com/)
- In addition, it is the lack of color that allows many participants to feel the freedom in creativity and eliminates the pain of choosing a palette. Many people finish the month of ink drawing and find that their perception of color schemes, line art and other types of work has changed significantly for the better. Because for a whole month they were limited (or released) in only two colors: WHITE AND BLACK. This is precisely the whole basic idea of inky October: it’s gallant, strict and free essence.
- Take brushes, feathers, brush pens, black markers! Create, pour out the most secret thoughts on paper and sketch the world around you! Inktober is waiting!
TRANSLATION DIFFICULTIES: ORIGINAL FILM AND ITS ADAPTATION
I would
like to devote my first post to comparing Russian-language adaptations of films
and their originals, and make the difference in the meaning of phrases in
different languages.
- In the
beginning, I would really like to recommend watching movies / cartoons in
English, especially what you have already watched. For example, I watched
Hercules and Mulan in English.
- Now let's move on to my observation. When you watch a long-familiar film in its original voice acting, you understand what work the translators did to adapt it in our country.
- I
understood this especially clearly when watching Mulan. The song "You Are
a Fighter" ("Ты боец"), which in the original is
called "I'll make a man out of you", while listening (and reading
because I watched with subtitles) evoked funny emotions after comparison. For
example, there is the line "Did they send me daughters, when I asked for
sons?" In the Russian adaptation, the line sounds like "Only for
victory I need fighters" ("Только для победы мне
нужны бойцы"). The original version is
clearly funnier, agree? Even the beginning of the song is different.
- English version: "Let's get down to business, to defeat the Huns"
- Russian version: "Fathers sent you to fight here." ("Вас сюда прислали воевать отцы").
- So, you can see the difference that was made to adapt this song for Russian.
- In general, what I wanted to say by this. I advise you to watch movies that you have already seen in the original voice acting, with subtitles (preferably both English and Russian) for better understanding, compare the original and the translation. It is not only interesting, but also useful. Your English will really improve, as well as with other languages, if you learn them. For example, watching anime in the original voice acting, but with Russian subtitles, helps to learn a couple of new Japanese phrases. :D
- Watch cool movies, learn languages, develop! It is very interesting! I will be glad to read your comments on this topic!
