I would
like to devote my first post to comparing Russian-language adaptations of films
and their originals, and make the difference in the meaning of phrases in
different languages.
- In the
beginning, I would really like to recommend watching movies / cartoons in
English, especially what you have already watched. For example, I watched
Hercules and Mulan in English.
- Now let's move on to my observation. When you watch a long-familiar film in its original voice acting, you understand what work the translators did to adapt it in our country.
- I
understood this especially clearly when watching Mulan. The song "You Are
a Fighter" ("Ты боец"), which in the original is
called "I'll make a man out of you", while listening (and reading
because I watched with subtitles) evoked funny emotions after comparison. For
example, there is the line "Did they send me daughters, when I asked for
sons?" In the Russian adaptation, the line sounds like "Only for
victory I need fighters" ("Только для победы мне
нужны бойцы"). The original version is
clearly funnier, agree? Even the beginning of the song is different.
- English version: "Let's get down to business, to defeat the Huns"
- Russian version: "Fathers sent you to fight here." ("Вас сюда прислали воевать отцы").
- So, you can see the difference that was made to adapt this song for Russian.
- In general, what I wanted to say by this. I advise you to watch movies that you have already seen in the original voice acting, with subtitles (preferably both English and Russian) for better understanding, compare the original and the translation. It is not only interesting, but also useful. Your English will really improve, as well as with other languages, if you learn them. For example, watching anime in the original voice acting, but with Russian subtitles, helps to learn a couple of new Japanese phrases. :D
- Watch cool movies, learn languages, develop! It is very interesting! I will be glad to read your comments on this topic!

I completely agree with you that it is better to watch films and cartoons in original language. It will give full understanding of situation. However, I think that you are not considering both sides of the coin. There are several films, which were translated in appropriate way.

ОтветитьУдалитьAnd of course, I agree with you, because there are a lot of films that were translated and adaapted for us really good. Also there are some films whose translations were, in some cases, better than their originals. There are exceptions everywhere :)
Wow! I read this post with such pleasure! Now I want to watch my favorite films in the original voice acting, for me personally, it would be a great experiment!
ОтветитьУдалитьThanks to the above examples, I even wanted to reconsider the cartoon "Mulan". You know, I really love Disney cartoons. Thanks to your thoughts, I think I’ll definitely watch a movie with its original voice acting!
It's always better to watch movies in original language. By doing it, you can understand sense&meaning of different things as they were conceived. Totally agree with you! Thanks for informative post, your comparison&example. Want to go and watch something right now!
